I just can’t stand people that put on so much perfume or cologne that it is hard to breathe when standing near them. It was the case yesterday when a female membership director attended to me at a new gym in my area. Yes, I appreciate the fact that you wanted to smell good but you were going a little overboard with it. As with everything in life… moderation is key! It took me a few hours before my sinuses cleared from the overwhelming scent. I can’t imagine the amount of perfume bottles she goes through a year.
Donald Burleson sums it up perfectly:
Too much perfume is considered especially heinous when the stench is so strong as to cause allergic reactions or when the odor can be detected from more than 3 feet away. Remember, the quality of perfume is inversely proportional to the price, and one can quickly tell if you are wearing a cheap, “stink pretty” perfume.

One wonders what smell is being covered up by an excessive amount of perfume or cologne.

I can’t stand that either. One coworker was pretty odiferous today and I told him when he was offending my sinuses and giving me a headache. I especially dread long elevator rides with smelly people. I can only hold my breath for so long.

I know! It’s really bad. It makes my nose run like there’s no tomorrow and I rarely have tissues in my bag. Yuck!

Amen! I even had to ask a girl that worked for me “Not” to wear perfume because it was killing everyone.
Be safe…

[…] I was totally going to post about this yesterday but Foo has done it! I am highly allergic to cheap perfume and so many people on the train wear a lot of it. From the moment I stepped on the train my nose began to run and I didn’t have any tissues. I felt so sick by the time the train was pulling in to Central because I’d been sniffing back snot for 45 minutes. I then bought a packet of tissues (9 4 ply tissues) for $1.50! I couldn’t believe it and I wish I’d said “Are you kidding? I’ll get them from the pharmacy!” Instead I dug out all my change and paid for them. I’m sure they’re only 70c at the pharmacy down the stairs. […]

There’s a comment that always works on those nasal offenders:
“I like your perfume/cologne, but must you maranade in it?”
:)

Yes - the key is moderation and quality perfume. Even a little scent of cheap perfume can be too much to take.
BUT - I must admit, I definitely prefer to be around someone with too much perfume than someone with BAD BODY ODOUR - gosh! now THAT is intoxicating and inhaling bad BO is like I’m being gassed into a coma!
Many moons ago, I worked with someone ( no names but you know who you are!) and his room constantly smelled like a pigs’ abattoir - yes, you can almost smell it your end too, huh? And everytine I had to speak to him, I had to hold my breath. That’s a feat - you know - being able to talk and hold your breath at the same time like Houdini.
anyway, I kept my sentences short and to the point - no chitter-chatter coz the smell was soooooooooo overbearing.
So which is worse - too much perfume or bad BO; my verdict hands down is………..BAD BODY ODOUR anytime!!!!

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Have a coworker right now whose REEKING of either some cheap-ass perfume or oil. (Oils are even worse cause they are STRONG.)
Makes my eyes burn, throat burn, and sometimes I sneeze.
I consider it rude when people come to work reeking of perfume because they are not being considerate to those with allergies. PERFUME IS NOT MEANT TO COVER UP BODY ODOR PEOPLE, TAKE A DAMN SHOWER!
