Superman Returns (with a Big Bang)!

THIS is how a superhero comic book movie is supposed to be made! Bryan Singer reminds us what we have missed in a classic superhero film and that there is no one like the “good ole” Superman - the original on screen comic book hero.

I felt nostalgia… like the first time I saw the FIRST Superman movie back in the 80s. This movie “Wow’ed” me - I honestly didn’t expect it! I think it is the best Superhero/comic book movie this decade or maybe “ever”? It wasn’t too flashy, there wasn’t too much violence, it had the right balance with human emotion and comedy. Singer captured the human side and showed that a superhero film doesn’t need to be all beat’em up and everything being blown up. There is also a twist, kind of a pleasant surprise. I was glad to see that he didn’t make Clark Kent too goofy as in the old films.

Acting was above average. The guy who plays Superman (Brandon Routh) is an uncanny Christopher Reeve look a like. Kate Bosworth could have been a little more aggressive being Lois Lane. Spacey played a good Lex Luthor but not in the same mold as Gene Hackman.

Step aside Spielberg, Bryan Singer is the new king of this era. Seems like everything you touch so far has turned to gold. This is the best movie you have made so far. He should make all the superhero comic book movies! Marvel better find an answer quick as Singer is on DC Comic’s turf now and cashing in big time.

The Superman franchise is revived…. Watch for another superman movie (or two) again as with the Hollywood syndrome! I would like to see a little more of Superman’s comic book villains than just Lex.

One thing though, I have to gripe about Superman’s boots/shoes…. they did something weird to his boots they look like oversized army boots - it looks horrible.

The Spiderman 3 teaser trailer before the movie was a nice surprise. That looks like one to watch too!

As with always, a movie is not going to be liked by everyone - someone going to this movie to see a mindless beat’em up or tonnes of building/cars getting blown up or villains getting beaten till oblivion… is probably going to be disappointed. This movie strikes a balance between both fantasy and human emotion. It is on par with the first Superman movie.
