Jet Li, one of the “true” martial artist left in this era has supposely made his final martial arts movie with “Fearless”. Star of American made movies like Lethal Weapon 4, Romeo Must Die, The One and Cradle 2 the Grave … Jet has said that he has proven himself and is ready to enbark on a “new chapter and challenge in his life”. His recent interview does indicate that there may still be life yet for him in action movies (i.e. he goes on to say that “action” movies and “martial arts” movies are two different genres). Li quote’s:
“Let me stress that martial arts movies and action movies are two separate things. Action could be modern times and set among city streets. What I term as martial arts movie would be the likes of Wong Fei Hung (“Once Upon a Time in China”) series. I just feel it’s time to close this chapter in my life.”
So does that mean that he will continue doing action movies? It remains to be seen. I have to admit that big screen martial art type “beat-em-up” movies are long gone and immersed within the Hollywood of yesteryear with the evidence of the straight to DVD movies of Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme to name some. However, the ever modest and likable Li still has the star power and presence to bring to the big screen as he has not taken the path of making “cheezy” action or martial art films, instead choosing his films wisely and to a certain extent going back to his movie roots/ heritage. Whatever it is you are embarking on, hopefully you make the right choice and good luck.
Oh yes, hurry up and regret your decision so that we can see you again on the big screen - I miss the Jet Li of old already. I am sure I speak for many. ;-)
