Happy Birthday to …. me!
32 years of age and counting. Here are some events and facts in the year I was born (1974):
- Watergate scandal: Seven are indicted for their role in the Watergate break-in and charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice.
- President Richard M. Nixon (nearly) impeached and later becomes first becomes the first President of the United States to resign from office.
- USA agrees to stop fighting in Vietnam and start pulling troops.
- Charles de Gaulle Airport opens in Paris, France.
- In Brighton, United Kingdom, ABBA wins the nineteenth Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden singing “Waterloo”.
- “The Rumble in the Jungle”: Muhammad Ali knocks out George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire to regain the World Heavyweight Boxing championship.
- The Altair 8800, the first personal computer, goes on sale
- Happy Days, Six million Dollar Man, Young and the Restless, Good Times, Little House on the Prairie and $250,000 Pyramid premiers on TV.
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre opens in theaters.
- People magazine is published for the first time.
- Academy Awards: The Godfather 2 won best picture at the Academy Awards, Francis Ford Copolla won Best Director for the movie.
Ellen Burstyn won Best Actress for her role in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and Art Carney won Best Actor in Harry and Tonto - Top US television show was The Waltons
- I Honestly Love You first reaches #1 on the Billboard charts, giving Olivia Newton-John her first top-selling single in the United States.
- Other top selling music artist were Barbara Streisand, Roberta Flack, Eric Clapton, Tony Orlando and Dawn.
- Baseball: The Cleveland Indians host “Ten Cent Beer Night”, but have to forfeit the game to the Texas Rangers due to drunken and unruly fans.
- Ohio State wins the Rose Bowl beating USC 42-41
- Boston Celtics wins the NBA Finals
- Miami Dolphins wins the NFL Superbowl
- Oakland Athletics wins the Baseball World Series
- Minimum Wage is $2
- Cost of gas was approximately $0.52 per gallon
- Average price of a car was $3850
- Average household income $9668
- Average house cost $44250
- Stamps costs $0.10 per piece
- Bread cost $0.38
- Milk cost $1.40 a gallon

Good idea. I remember watching Watergate on TV. This dates me. You were born in a busy year. My next birthday maybe I’ll steal your idea, if I still remember it in July.
