AOL’s services may soon be free to anyone who already has a high-speed Internet connection, The Wall Street Journal reported today. The Journal’s story is behind a subscription firewall, of course, but Reuters has a recap here (and the Journal offers a “free preview” here). According to the Journal, the only customers AOL would still charge under the proposal would be those who get their Internet access via the company’s own dial-up connection. AOL lost 850,000 subscribers to high-speed Internet providers in the first quarter, the Journal said, and hopes it could make up for lost subscription revenue with gains in advertising.
